I Don’t Have Time for this Zit: Taking Care of your Skin Pre and Post Workout

Working out:  Awesome! Losing weight:  Awesome! Breakouts:  Not awesome.  Breakouts are the worst.  Hormones, stress, and diet may be a factor of the unwanted breakouts but have you ever thought that the sweat, oils and bacteria from a workout may also be a contributing factor? Here are some quick skincare tips to help keep those breakouts under control while shedding those lbs!

Pre and Post Workout Skincare Tips:

*Avoid putting on heavy amounts of foundation. This combined with heat, sweat and oils can lead to clogged pores and unwanted breakouts.

*Apply a lightweight sunscreen if you plan to exercise outdoors. I say lightweight because you want something that will protect but won’t clog your pores!

*If you like to wear a headband or sweatband while working out make sure it is pushed further back on the hairline; Placing it directly over the skin causes buildup of oil and sweat resulting in clogged pores and breakouts.

*Don’t touch your face. This is especially true if you use any equipment while you work out because bacteria thrives on this stuff. Wiping your face will transfer the nasty-ness all over your face. If you are a sweat machine like me, try using a clean towel during your work out and wash your hands before and after.

*Cleanse your skin immediately following your workout with tepid water and a gentle cleanser. Avoid scrubs as it may be too irritating and warmer water since the skin is already flushed post workout.

*Change out of your workout clothes at least 30 minutes after your workout and if possible rinse off. Pores are all over your body, so your back and chest are also prone to breakouts too.

*Moisturize and hydrate! Yes it is super important to drink lots of water before, during and after a workout; but did you know our internal organs absorb the water faster than it reaches our skin? This means applying a moisturizer after you cleanse is super important to give your skin the proper hydration it needs. I recommend something with a vitamin c as it is great for hydration but also has a ton of anti-aging benefits!

*And lastly…Don’t forget to apply another round of sunscreen (if it is daytime of course).

Here’s an easy and simple 3-step skincare plan using IMAGE Skincare products that would be great for ANY skin type:

Cleanse: The IMAGE Ormedic Facial Cleanser is organic and provides healing properties to the skin. It is also a 3-in-1 product: cleanser, exfoliator and toner. (This eliminates extra steps in your skincare routine which I think is a bonus!)

Moisturize: The IMAGE Vital C is a great lightweight hydrating serum that rejuvenates and refreshes dull skin while minimizing and reducing visible effects of stress and fatigue.

Protect: The IMAGE Skincare Prevention+ Daily Matte Moisturizer SPF 32+ is a great oil-free and broadband spectrum SPF that contains a blend of antioxidants to protect the skin against damaging effects of the sun and environment.

  1. I have large pores and I hate them so much! Thanks for the tips, I agree cleanliness and keeping things off my face would be a huge help.

    1. You’re right, keeping things off your face is a great idea. I was a huge make up person before kids, and found that when I stopped wearing so much heavy foundation my face started to look better! I’m so glad you found these tips helpful!

    1. I’m with you, I am so bad at remembering to drink water…let alone moisturize my face! The vital c is awesome because it moisturizes, isn’t heavy on your face, and it smells good…so it makes it easier to remember to put it on! Glad the tips are helpful!

  2. Great tips! I’ve been guilty of not washing my face right away after a workout and my skin doesn’t let me forget it the next day.

    1. Exactly! Sometimes I think I’m “too busy” to wash my face after a workout, but it really doesn’t take too long…and I’ve notice my skin way happier when I take a minute to wash it after exercising! You’re right, it will totally hold a grudge if I don’t 😉

  3. All of these tips are a major YES, YES, YES from me! It’s so important to take care of your skin even while working on the rest of your body. I am constantly preaching skin care on my social medias and blog and I can’t say it enough. I loved this blog post!

    1. It is SO important, and sometimes we don’t realize it until it’s too late! Keep preaching sister!

  4. I always clean my skin with cleanser, but I didn’t use anything to hydrate or moisturize my skin, Thanks for the tips! 🙂

    1. Cleansing is such a huge step, it’s great that you are doing that! I’ve noticed with the Vital C that my skin is not only hydrated, but gives it a more youthful look…won’t complain about that!

  5. Great tips! I never understood why some girls are with a full face of makeup when they go to the gym. yes I know some may be coming from work or an event … I too have done this but I will use baby wipes to take off all my makeup. I hate sweating with makeup on! And keeping germy hands away from one’s face is soooo important!

    1. That’s great that you take care of your skin, keep it up! I used to be TERRIBLE at taking care of my skin, and it definitely comes back to haunt you!
