If you’d have asked me five years ago if I would consider facial treatments, like Botox, to reduce the appearance of wrinkles I would have laughed, as I brushed my stylish side swept bangs from my youthfully smooth forehead, and said, “No. I’m beautiful and young and it will be this way forever.” (or maybe just no 😉 )
Fast forward three years. I have a toddler and one on the way. I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror (which is usually all the time we get as moms) but I notice that the person looking back at me is scowling….but I’m not intentionally furrowing my brow. What in the name?! Is that a…
Fine lines and wrinkles are an inevitable part of the aging process. Everyone will approach the day when they look in the mirror to find those forehead lines don’t disappear into your skin like they did before. In reality, it’s not a big deal. Aging is part of life. So why does it matter?
Well for me, those little lines are a reminder that time is fast. They are a reminder that I can’t do some of the same things I used to do, energy is harder to come by, and my knees hurt when the weather gets colder. They are a reminder that I’m getting older and there are more wrinkles on the way. But I’m definitely NOT old. I don’t FEEL old. So why should I look like I’m getting older? I’m just not quite ready.
It’s funny to see how conversations among friends change from dating, clothing, and partying to marriage, kids, fine lines, and wrinkles. So interestingly enough, I had a lot of friends talking about Botox. Some people are very interested, some can’t be bothered, and some consider it downright evil. So I figured I would do some research myself.
The Facts About Botox
Botox cosmetic is the first and only FDA approved treatment to temporarily reduce facial lines and wrinkles. It works underneath the skin to decrease the muscle activity responsible for forming these lines. It’s as simple as putting your wrinkle-causing muscles in time out.
Reservations about Botox stem from concerns about product safety. Backed by more than 15 years of medical research, Botox is proven to be safe and effective not only for facial applications. According to the Mayo Clinic, the active ingredients are used by doctors for a variety of conditions such as neck spasms, migraines, overactive bladder, excessive sweating, and lazy eye. Healthline, WebMD, and many other medical and health related websites from my research corroborate the safety and aesthetic benefit of Botox injections.
However, the safety aspect is restricted to Botox cosmetic. There is no generic brand of Botox or “cheap” Botox. It is not uncommon to see extremely good deals on facial injectable products that reduce fine lines and wrinkles. These off-brand products are not uniquely manufactured, measured, and distributed under the same regulations as the FDA approved Botox cosmetic. Lisa Jenks, M.D. wrote an article regarding black market Botox. She writes,
“When you are walking down the street and you see a store that is selling Gucci handbags for $25 each, I am pretty sure that you are immediately aware those aren’t real Gucci items. Well, you need to have the same thought process when you read an ad for ridiculously low-priced Botox. Knock-offs or fake products may not be a big deal if you are talking about a purse, but they are a big deal when it comes to what is injected into your body.” – Lisa Jenks, M.D.
It makes sense…you get what you pay for! Make sure your Botox is the real deal, distributed directly by Allergan, and applied by certified specialists. The Botox cosmetic website recommends you check the Botox vial for the official logo and holographic image that says Allergan before administration to ensure you’re getting the right product! They also have a handy specialist search to find a reputable medical provider in your area.
With all of my information in hand, I decided to move forward with Botox. I based my decision on the following:
- Safety – FDA approved, backed by over 15 years of clinical research, and extremely safe when applied by a certified specialist
- Effectiveness – Proven to soften lines and wrinkles within five days and last for up to four months
- Downtime – with two kiddos, my hands and days are full. Botox injections require no downtime (just no strenuous workouts for a day…which is a good excuse for a “rest” day)
- Cost – I don’t need a face lift by any means, and Botox is a cost effective way to get the results I’m looking for
The Botox Treatment
Genesis MedSpa is a leading provider of Botox in Colorado Springs. With a quick phone call, I scheduled an appointment for my Botox treatment. On the day of my appointment, I went into the office with a clean face and several questions to ask the doctor before “going under the needle” so to speak.
During the consultation, my Botox certified doctor asked me about my concerns as far as facial lines. My main concerns are my frown and forehead lines. With a brief examination, the doctor can determine the amount of product (or “units”) to use…it’s so simple! Then we took some time to dive into my questions before moving forward:
What do the injections feel like?
Doctor: They feel like a small poke. The injection sites may look like small bee stings for a little bit. There may be some minor bruising as well.
What are the restrictions?
Doctor: Do not lie down for 4 hours, no vigorous exercise for 4 hours, don’t scratch or massage the treated areas for 4 hours…but DO contract the treated muscle area every few minutes for the first hour!
Will I be able to move my face?
Doctor: Yes, it does not alter your natural features and expressions.
What happens if I don’t like it?
Doctor: Schedule a follow up visit so we can address any concerns, we want you to love your results! Botox is temporary, and will wear off completely if you do not want to continue treatments.
Can I see the Botox vial, and are you a certified specialist?
The whole procedure (including consultation) takes about ten minutes. For me, the treatment was easy and pretty painless…a few pokes with the syringe, but nothing to write home about. The injection sites were red with a little puffiness that went away in a matter of minutes. After that, I waited for the botox to kick in which takes a few days. The treatment areas are relaxed, and you can see where the product is working without hindering your expressions…it’s amazing!
Now, the moment of truth…a before and after photo. Now you see ’em…now you don’t!
(Please note: I did not edit the photos in any way…otherwise I would’ve had to figured out how to edit my breakouts and unruly eyebrows, too ;))
I LOVE my results! My forehead looks smooth again, and that scowling girl I saw in the mirror must be on vacation because I haven’t seen her in awhile…
